In the wake of a new 2023 Minnesota law is legalizing the recreational use of Cannabis; the landscape of healthcare, especially in senior care settings, is transforming. Since cannabis products have not been widely used in older adult care in the past, there is a need for guidance in navigating the clinical implications of cannabis use in aging care settings. As cannabis becomes more widely accepted and available, organizations find themselves grappling with new questions regarding how to approach and support residents who choose to use cannabis products. The first in a series of articles, explores cannabis, cannabinoids, and recreational use.
Cannabis and Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids constitute a group of chemical compounds present in the Cannabis plant, with more than 100 distinct cannabinoids identified to date. Among these, the two most frequently discussed publicly are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds engage with a sophisticated cell-signaling system within the body, responsible for regulating various physiological processes. The effects produced by cannabinoids can vary, influenced by factors such as the specific type of cannabinoid, its concentration, the presence of other compounds in the cannabis plant, and individual user differences.
Recreational Cannabis
Minnesota established the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management to design the regulatory framework and have it ready to start retail sales in 2025. In the meantime, carefully review packaging; many products contain multiple servings or higher levels of THC than is indicated by law. It is also possible that CBD-labeled products may also contain small amounts of THC. Consumers and caregivers need to know that these products are not FDA-regulated and not subject to the quality assurance process of Medical Cannabis so they may vary in quality, components, and dose listed on the package.
